US Citizenship Program

There are various ways to obtain US citizenship. Citizenship can be acquired by birth, acquisition, or by blood relationship.

Every child born in America is an American citizen.

For children born out of wedlock, the status of each parent must be examined separately. Regarding the father's American citizenship, he must have been an American citizen at the time of the child's birth. Citizenship acquired after birth is not valid. Furthermore, proof of blood relationship between the child and the father is required, and the father must agree to provide financial support until the child reaches the age of 18. The father must acknowledge paternity in writing and under oath, and legitimize the child according to residency regulations. Regarding the mother's American citizenship, the rules are determined by the child's date of birth. A child born before June 12, 2017, is considered an American citizen if the mother was an American citizen at the time of birth and resided in the United States for at least one year prior to the child's birth. Children born after June 12, 2017, are considered American citizens if their mother was an American citizen at the time of birth and resided in the United States for at least five years prior to the child's birth.

There are also certain conditions for acquiring citizenship through naturalization. In this case, individuals are voluntary in their pursuit of US citizenship. Natural citizenship, such as that obtained by birth, is not a factor. Let's look at the conditions:

  1. The applicant must be at least 18 years old.
  2. They must pass tests that measure proficiency in English and American culture.
  3. Applicants must have resided in the applicant's state for at least three months prior to applying.
  4. Individuals who have been permanent residents of the United States for 5 years must have resided in the United States for at least 30 months in the 5 years preceding the application.
  5. Individuals who have been permanent residents of the United States for three years and are married to a U.S. citizen must have resided in the U.S. for at least 18 months in the three years preceding their application.

Citizenship by blood refers to situations where a parent becomes a US citizen, and their children, who are not yet 18 years old, also become US citizens. However, in this case, the child must also have permanent residency, i.e., a Green Card. It is sufficient for at least one parent to be a US citizen.
